We are Open....

 

Having a store these days has become quite challenging, to say the least.

Back when we first opened Way Out West in 1995 and then Tattered Rose in 1999, all we had to do was open our doors. People shopped.

There wasn't really Internet shopping yet and the world wasn't going through a pandemic. Of course, there was SARS back in 2003 but that didn't negatively impact us in Manitoba. In fact, we were never so busy with tourism as that year because many of the film productions had decided to move their operations from Toronto, where SARS was a major cause for concern, to Winnipeg, where it wasn't.

That was the year we got to meet some celebrities who graced our shops.....Jean Smart, Jeff Goldblum and Robin Williams. It was a fun, exciting and busy year to have as shop in Winnipeg.

Edmonton has generally been good to us, considering the really short hours we are open. But the past few years, with the drop in oil prices up to this year with COVID-19, construction around the building Tattered Rose is located in and all of the repercussions from all of these things.....well, let's just say, it is not for the faint of heart.

This is why we ask, on behalf of all small businesses like ours, that you try to shop in and support us rather than the big box stores when ever possible. If we all make an extra effort to get out of our comfort zone, and venture out to some of these shops, I know it will make a difference. We will do a happy dance every time we sell something because it means we can continue being in business and get through this really rough patch.

Looking forward to the other side of this and hoping that we can all stay safe and healthy and then thrive.

Latest Tattered Rose News on Covid-19 Restrictions

 

With the new provincial restrictions due to Covid-19, Tattered Rose can safely (and legally) have up to 6 people in the store at one time. This will not be a problem.

We have slightly shorter hours than usual during the latest restrictive period, which means that our hours for the upcoming month will be:

Wed to Sat December 9-12             11 am to 3 pm

Wed to Sat December 16-19           11 am to 3 pm

Wed & Thurs December 23 & 24    11 am to 3 pm

Wed to Sat January 6-9                   11 am to 3 pm

Please feel secure in visiting Tattered Rose. We disinfect surfaces touched by customers after each visit, we have hand sanitizers, we wear a mask while customers are in the store and are here to make this work so that everyone feels safe.

So, if you have a chance to visit our newly re-merchandised shop, we welcome you and look forward to seeing you.

We're all in this together and can get though it.

A Personal Message from Me (the owner of Tattered Rose)

 

As we all navigate the current way of living, having restrictions to the way we shop, work, communicate.....I need to remind myself that there is always something to be grateful for.

Let me list a few....

1. I am grateful for my customers/friends who continued to support Tattered Rose amidst so many obstacles; namely Covid-19 and the invasive construction that plagued our shop for the better of 3 months. You found a way to shop and keep us(me) going. I can never thank you enough....we are still here because of YOU!♥

2. So grateful for my home, my 3 beautiful cats and being able to go for walks near my home, sometimes with a dear friend who lives nearby.

3. Terribly grateful for the creativity that was bestowed upon me because while more time was spent at home, I was able to design and create some one-of-a-kind clothing to have in the shop. This is clothing made from new and vintage fabrics that no one else sells. It can only be found at Tattered Rose and we love that idea.

Yes, things are different and as we approach the holiday season being asked to stay home, not shop, not be with loved ones, it is not going to be easy. I'm pretty sure that shopping in our store is safe. All precautions have been taking to ensure that you can shop without having to worry....there are no crowds in the store at any given moment.

I would like for the store to keep going and I have every confidence that we will see the other side of this nasty pandemic. I look forward to being able to talk to my customers again without worrying about being too close.....and I look forward to hugs! Oh, I have missed hugs.

So, we are sending out a big virtual hug to everyone and wishing for you a peaceful holiday season and a better time in 2021.

Update on Store Hours & Construction

 

The tarps are gone from the front of our store this week and they are taking down the scaffolding.....we can see out of our shop again and you can see us!

While we have been in hiding, new and beautiful items have been arriving at the shop weekly. New exclusive Tattered Rose designs (including dresses that are perfect for weddings and graduations) New Magnolia Pearl arrived this week, along with new French Kande jewellery.

We are looking forward to seeing our customers again and are truly grateful for those who dared to enter the circus tent....I mean construction tarps.

Our hours are going to be shortened just a bit during these renewed restrictions....so we will be open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm OR by appointment outside of these hours.

Store Hours Today...

 

We are open today....Saturday, November 21st, from 11 am to 3 pm. We are hoping that this is the last week of having tarps obscuring the front of our store from the world.....

Layering.....

 

Our new Urban Romantique crinkled dress in graphite worn with brown leather belt, brown knit shrug-scarf thingy, ruffled arm bands and French Kande brass and silver medallion necklace.

Kind of has an Outlander meets 1900's London street urchin vibe.

This made me gasp with glee! Much better in person.

Remembrance Day

 

Tattered Rose would normally be closed on Remembrance Day....however, we have an out of town customer who can only make it in today.

So we will open from 12 to 4 pm today.

A Guide to Dressing in 2020 (during Covid-19)

 

We all know that things have changed since the Coronavirus became so prevalent in our lives and in the media.

Many of us had to stay home for a few months back in March and April. And while we hibernated, we found that clothing became much less of a priority. Since we neither went to work nor saw anyone (outside of our immediate family) there was no need to wear our beautiful clothing. P.J.'s became our comfort zone and our salvation. 

We could binge-watch Netflix series and even have Zoom meetings while wearing our loungewear. Perhaps an effort to wear something resembling clothing was made for above the waist if we had a Zoom meeting with colleagues. Otherwise, we made the best of things wearing our not-so-glamourous stuff

Time has progressed, however. We are no longer forced to stay home and wearing a (mandatory) face mask has become one of our necessities of life. 

And we are out in the world and we get to once again wear some of our clothing. Some of you even invested in a few new pieces from Tattered Rose....just to be able to shop in a clothing boutique again was wonderful. And maybe you just needed a pick-me-up to better face the new way of the world.

Which brings me (the owner of Tattered Rose and the author of this post) to why I am here, writing something new on the Tattered Rose blog....

The store has been kept in tip top form for the customers who slowly returned to shopping. During the summer, we didn't have our usual influx of new stock but we still brought in new things for our customers to see.

We are truly excited to have a brand new (to us) line of French-inspired jewellery by French Kande. You can watch the inspiring story of how it all began:

We continue to adore our Magnolia Pearl and get new items in regularly, as they become available. This clothing is not for the masses but it certainly has a strong following of those of us who love artisan details, imperfection and natural fibres in the clothing we choose to wear.

And last, but not least, is our in-house brand of hand made clothing that is designed AND made by me. I studied Fashion Design at Ryerson University in Ontario and I am so happy to be using my education and love of clothing to bring bespoke style clothing to my customers. You cannot buy this clothing anywhere else, which is so important to us and to many of our customers. We use a lot of vintage fabrics and hand-dying to create one-of-a-kind items that you can wear and enjoy forever, knowing that you won't see hundred of women wearing the same thing. Our garment label is "Carol Simon"

Of course, we continue to carry Cut Loose and Grizas. 

Overall, a nice mix of treasures are in our shop at all times.

Friday, October 30th......the year 2020

 

We are open today 11 am to 3 pm.

(shorter hours due to construction)

"Look beyond the surface and you will find a gem" In other words, Tattered Rose is still hidden behind tarps that cover the front of our building. We don't get to see sunlight or people walking by.....and people walking by can't see our store.

But we will be there today and tomorrow. For our customers who have been to our shop.....we're beneath the tarps and through the wooden door on the side.

Wednesday, October 28, 2020 Closed this afternoon....

 

We apologize for having to close early again today. The noise from the construction (jack hammering) was causing a headache and we did not want to subject our customers to that noise level.

We will be open tomorrow.....the tarps are still up so please know that Tattered Rose is still in there somewhere.....

Adventures in Shopping.....Escape the Ordinary

 

Tattered Rose IS open today from 11 am to 2 pm, albeit behind a circus-like tent of tarps due to the construction that has been ongoing since the beginning of Spring. 

They have poured the last of the concrete this week and with the cold weather, the tarps and heaters have been implemented to make sure that the concrete cures properly.

Tattered Rose was open yesterday and as long as our customers were aware of how to enter our store, it went fairly well.

So there is a temporary wooden door amidst the tarps, on the side of the parking lot. A sign reads: "Store Entrance Tattered Rose" 

If you look at it as an adventure in shopping and not some boring store entrance, it is fun. Once inside the door you will see the real entrance to our store, where LOTS of beautiful new items are.

So, for our brave and lovely customers, please don't let the tarps stop you from visiting us today. We are hoping that the tarps will be gone by next week!

French Kande has Landed!

 

We are thrilled to finally have French Kande in our shop! It works so well with most  of our clothing.

Construction Update....

 

Construction in front of the building where Tattered Rose is located is winding down at last. Some final touches next week will render the front of the building inaccessible again, which affects our front entrance.

Therefore, we will be closed for two days:  Wednesday, October 14 and Thursday, October 15.

We will be open on Friday and Saturday of next week so we hope you can stop by to see our new arrivals and fresh displays.

We apologize for this ongoing inconvenience but it is coming to an end....the construction part, anyway.

Tattered Rose Explained....

 

Tattered Rose.

We come by our store name honestly and as an homage to where we come from.

The "tattered" part is my Dad for his work clothes that were mended and broken in. A hard working, honest man and my hero.

The "rose" part is my Mom, for she passed her love of roses to me. An enduring love that may fade but will never die. I will miss her forever.

This is Tattered Rose. It doesn't get more personal than that.

We Are Open Today....Saturday, September 26th

 

We seem to be late with our Fall collections (for several reasons we won't dwell on here) including this stunning French-inspired line of jewellery that isn't here yet...but soon.

New Magnolia Pearl is in....including these hard to find distressed jeans:

Cut Loose is on the way too with some great, wearable pieces you can add to your wardrobe for Fall.

And then there is our own exclusive line of demi-couture and one-of-a-kind pieces that are designed and created one at a time.....painstakingly from the initial idea,  the creating of the pattern, the fabric preparation, the cutting out of each garment by hand one at a time right through to the making of and finishing. 

The part we like the best is that no one else has these designs and they are available only at Tattered Rose. That may not matter to some but to those who do care, we do it all for you. 

You can rest assured that if you buy one of our "demi-couture" dresses, no one else will be wearing it to your grad or your wedding or anywhere else. Not in the forest, not at the art gallery event, not in a fashion shoot.

CLOSED Thursday & Friday Due to Construction

 

UPDATE on the CONSTRUCTION:

The noise and vibrations from the construction outside our door are unbearable, so we have decided to close for the rest of today and Friday.

We plan on being open Saturday, as they should be done with the really loud work by then....at least, that is what they told me.

Sorry for the confusion....I can hardly hear myself think right now with the noise!

Construction ZONE

The building that houses our shop has been under construction since Spring. This has meant no parking space for customers right now. There is still parking on the street.

It has just gotten real. As of yesterday, they are digging up the front of the building, right n front of our store. BUT, we are still accessible two ways:

1. Through the side where there are planks in place for walking on

OR...

2. Through our side door which is inside the building. You have to call us at (780) 488-1200 for access. We will let you in through the front doors to the building and into our not-so-secret side door. Think of it as an adventure.

We apologize for this inconvenience. With all that is going on with the pandemic this year, we sure didn't need to be in a construction zone on top of all that.....but we are. Once it is completed, the front of the building will be more beautiful than ever and our shop will be open in the usual way.

The inside of the store is still as inviting as ever, with new items popping up weekly. More home decor....more vintage.....more artisan and one-of-a-kind. That is the direction we are going in because this pandemic taught us something:

To enjoy the beauty in our homes and more meaningful clothing to wear.

Please don't hesitate to stop by.....we can't let a few construction guys stop us from enjoying the things we still like.

The Boyfriend Coat

The "Boyfriend Coat" is an old idea that most likely stems from the first time a man threw his coat over his lady's shoulders to keep her warm....at the expense of his own comfort.

THAT is the romantic part of the appeal of the boyfriend coat and why Tattered Rose has always embraced this style.

Duster coats, boyfriend coats, boyfriend blazers.....that is part of our repertoire. Looks great with your jeans but oh so feminine when juxtaposed with a pretty dress.
